Colorectal cancer screening
Colorectal cancer can often be prevented, not just found early
Most colorectal cancers grow slowly from polyps over many years. A colonoscopy can find and remove those polyps before they turn into cancer.
Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in Singapore, in both men and women. Early cancers and polyps usually cause no symptoms, which is why screening matters even when you feel well.

What a complete colonoscopy includes
- A well-cleaned bowelGood bowel preparation, so small and flat polyps are not hidden. How to prepare.
- The whole colon is examinedThe scope reaches the start of the colon (the caecum), and this is photographed.
- A careful, unhurried lookTime is taken to inspect the lining while the scope is withdrawn.
- Polyps removed completelyUsually in the same session, and sent to the laboratory.
- Results explained, next date setWhen to repeat the colonoscopy depends on what was found.
